Wireless pet containment system review.

First the problem.

In the red corner, Skillet a black male part lab at just over a year old and weighing in at around eighty pounds sixty of which is pure animal testosterone. He is the reigning defending IBF, ( I Be Free) WBC ( Won't Be Caged) and WBO (Wanna Be Out) World Champion.

All right I joke but really if you have ever owned or have a neighbor who owns this type of dog you get the point. I mean this dog doesn't fetch sticks, he fetches logs! But I digress, so on with the story. Though Skillet is a handful he is my handful and even with his constant chewing, digging and his horse like appetite he is over all a very smart and loving pet. And I wanted very much to keep him but anyone who knows about the black lab breed understands they like to run free. And I as well prefer letting him have room to run, chase, explore and pretty much be what he is a big ole puppy.

But here is where my problem comes in. Living in a small town (by small I mean about four by four blocks) where the main State Route which speed drops from sixty five to thirty five (but the vehicles mostly don't) passes along side my property. And added to this my town just passed a new stiffer law in regards to stray pets and I was beginning to think Skillet might need a new home seeing the small four foot fenced area that worked well for his first year was no longer working.

See I had built him an area with just your simple wire fence which is what fell in my budget range. As I could not afford a proper chain link fence around what is about an acre of land. But now Skillet had figured a way out at first I thought he was jumping over the fence, but later learned he had figured out how to put his back paw about halfway up and then pulling with his front paws on top and yes he was climbing the fence.

Petsafe a real pet saver.

The solution.

So now I'm at my local farm store one day and I'm just browsing the pet section looking for toy's, snacks and what not. When I come across this new fencing display and there it is the answer to my problem. Now I had already thought, priced and considered the work involved in getting one of the wire containment systems. And while price wise it was about the same as the wireless the thought of hand digging all around my property in what is almost rock hard soil where I live in Oklahoma was just a rather intimidating concept. And the added cost or availability of the right power equipment was out of reach.

But then there it was my solution at around $279.00 it was just in the budget. The Petsafe wireless containment system. The system comes with the base unit which can be sit in a central location and can be set for several different ranges I.E. 300 feet, 500 feet, 700 feet and so on. It comes with one collar and optional collars can be purchased and programmed. The collar has four correction level settings ranging from just a high pitch beep to a more severe shock for stubborn pets. It also comes with two set of pins for the collar, long for more thick haired pets and shorter pins for thinner haired pets.

For training the system comes with white flags which you place around your perimeter. You do this by walking while holding the collar at the height of your pet until the collar beeps. You continue this placing a flag about every five to ten feet apart around your set and desired area. Then what I did was place the collar on Skillet along with his regular collar and attaching a leash I simply walked him to the flags letting him pass the perimeter in two areas was all it took. And while some may think this cruel I say cruel would be my Skillet climbing the regular fence and in trying to chase down the water tanker flying by at 55 mph splat. That not only would be cruel but very sad for me. So the two shocks it took was well worth his new gained running room and my peace of mind.

Now I say two shocks because the system warns him with a beep when he gets to close before the actual shock. Plus the flags teaches him and warns visitors of the safe area, and it has worked so well there have been several times I've since let Skillet out with no collar. And even then he would not pass the flags. So with all this in mind I strongly recommend this to anyone with a stubborn wandering pet problem it has truly been the best solution at the best price with the easiest set up.

This sounds like a great idea for your own circumstances, regarding where you live, but I am not sure if would be for everyone, not for me anyway. Unless my circumstances required such precautions.

Thanks for bringing this to the world.

Thanks for reading my hub AJ and for your comment. I see your in the U.K. so what kinda of laws and or penalties do they have there concerning pet control. I ask this because besides my fears for Skillets safety. In most if not all cities here in the U.S. there are also hefty fines for those caught letting their pets roam loose. And with the ability to set this system for even smaller areas it helps with this problem as well. Not to mention God forbid your pet gets loose here and bites someone you will more than likey be sued.

As always though again thank you very much for the comment and your time. I'll be checking your hubs out as well as I see your living the life I so want to. Living out away from the big cities it would truly be a blessing to be able to work from home. I hope that continue to works well for you and may you be blessed always my friend. Oh And congrats on your new little package of joy be easy there or before you know it you'll have four or five of em running around. Ha ha,
