Antonio Margarito vs Joshua Clottey! My proof of plaster wraps

With the recent finding against Antonio Margarito for using an illegal substance on his hand wraps which was discovered prior to his fight against Shane Mosley. Arises the question of when and if he had used a hardener on his wraps before.

Many point to the fight against Miguel Cotto and the punishment and almost brutal beating Cotto took until finally giving up in the 11th round. And I for one would agree that in looking back it seems obvious that Margarito's wraps were most likely hardened during this fight. Because even in a sport where the goal is to beat the crap out of your opponent it's not often that you see someone as pummeled as Cotto after that fight.

And of course this leads to question what other fights were Margarito's hands wrapped with a hardening substance. And my thought is that it seem obvious to me that they were during his fight against Joshua Clottey. And here's where if you remember the fight you might say but wait, that fight went to the scorecards and Clottey wasn't pummeled and actually never seemed that hurt. But here is also where if you are a true boxing fan ( by this I mean if a fights on this weekend your watching or like me you pay for Showtime and HBO but rarely watch the movies) and pay attention then you have to think about the way Clottey fights ( defensive ) and about what did happen during that fight.

First let's examine Joshua Clottey and I'll start by saying I am a fan. While he's not the most exciting fighter out there I have been impressed with all of his fights. And he seems to step up to every challenge. I think one of his most notable fights was his total dismantling of the then never give up Diego Corrales may he rest in peace. But in that fight like Clottey's fight with Margarito, Clottey showed his defensive skills.

Now in saying defensive skills we're not talking old Roy Jones Jr, or Floyd Mayweather Jr, skills the way they move away from getting hit. Clottey stands in front of his opponent with his hands up in the block position lets his opponent get off and counters with quick combinations after his opponent stops. One of his biggest combinations is the double left hook upstairs and then down. And it is this style and the way his fight against Margarito played out that proves to me at least that Margarito had illegal wraps.

See Clottey was actually winning this fight up to around the 5th round when he complained that his hand was injured and I think the decision could have went either way as Clottey still made a valiant effort. But it was obvious that even though he kept throwing with the injured hand it wasn't as often or with the same bad intentions as in the early rounds. Margarito went on to win the fight by decision but Clottey was not hurt or damaged in any form as some of Margarito's other opponents.

But I point to the fact that Margarito was still throwing lots of punches but Clottey was taking most of the punches on the gloves and arms. And considering that when Margarito blocked punches if his wraps were hard Clottey was hitting the hardened wraps with full force. Which is why I think Clottey was not beat up in the face but suffered damage to his hands. It just makes since to me if Clottey didn't fight the style he does he would have probably been pummeled or TKO'd in this fight.

In the end I guess only Margarito and his camp know the truth, but to those of us who watched now a lot of his fights bring up questions. Like how does he destroy Carlos Quintana twice and then get beat handily by Paul Williams who later gets destroyed by the for named Quintana? Or Destroy Cotto and then when we know his wraps were caught get destroyed by Shane Mosley who lost to Cotto? We may never know the answers but things seem to make a little more sense!

Cotto is not a damaged fighter. He was cheated

Thanx dan for your comment and I agree Cotto was cheated. But I must also say I've watched most if not all of Cotto's fights and he's lookin a little like Fernando Vargas who if you remember or saw was never the same after his first big loss. Both fought a whole different style before and after thier losses. Cotto never boxed before Margarito he use to just come and roll over his opponents much like Vargas before Trinidad. To me the fact that Cotto eeked out a win over Clottey (who was not agressive at all) and didn't take the fight to Clottey. Leaves me wondering?? because like Vargas it's hard for Sluggers to change to boxers and Cotto was a pure slugger B4 Margarito.

Hmm... Cotto was indeed a slugger, but that doesnt mean that was all he was. Remember that he had an excellent amateur pedigree, and has a knack for making excellent adjustments in the middle of a bout - e.g. against Mosley.

I think that he has been mentally damaged by his experience with Margarito; and this kind of weakness has made him seem a much more human fighter. I remember when watching the Margarito debacle, one commentator said that the reason Cotto was such an exciting fighter was that occasionally his chin was suspect, as he'd suffered knockdowns before at light welterweight. It seems though, he's become a little too vulnerable since the heavy punishment to contend with top flight opponents.

Hey Alex, thanks for your comment. And I agree with you on the Cotto Mosley fight ( I kinda forgot about that fight). And looking back now after Mosley's domination of Margarito I guess you have to give Cotto even more credit for the win.

I do think Cotto might be in over his head though against Pacman. I don't think he's ever seen speed or power like Manny has. What do you think?

Great analysis, and I agree with you about the Clotley fight. In my opinion Margacheto should be banned from boxing forever and imprisoned at least for a year. Same for his trainer. I read about the Luis Resto Vs Billy Collins Jr scandal, I saw the pictures of Billy after the fight. It was horrible Billy not only lost his career by this way of cheating, he lost his life.

Google Billy Collins pictures and see it by yourself. By the boxing commission not being able to address this issue, now I dont know if Pacquiao (my favorite boxer) would have beaten Cotto if Cotto havent go through the Margarito beating. I read that Trinidad was found with some kind of illegal wrapping as well, so know Im not sure if all his fights are also illegal.

What about Pryor vs Arguello? I read that his trainer (the same that trained Resto) used pills for the treatment of asthma to enhanced pryors stamina during the fight.

Cotto was bust up badly by Pacquaio, a much small man than Margarito, are we saying that Pacquiao was wearing wraps because he bust him up badly? Also lets not forget that Tony had an iron jaw and wasn't really much of a blocker, could it be that Clottey hurt his hands hitting the iron jaw of Margarito?

Cotto decked Clottey with a jab, can we then say that Cotto was wearing wraps? He hurt Clottey more with a jab than Margarito "might have done with wraps"?

The Paul Williams fight is also of great interest, if we are saying Margarito had been cheating for god knows how long, does this give Williams' win even more creditability? Just some questions that need thinking about

Thanks omar and iamas. And Omar I think your so right about your reference to the Resto Collins fight and your point about the punishement issue. I mean if you took a chunk of mortar and beat someone with it hmmm well you'd probably be typing your comment from prison! So you make a good point about how we should look at this more seriously.

And iamas I kinda think Omar hit on your ? about Pacman and Cotto. By that I mean if you were the one omar beat in the head with a chunk of mortar do you think you would be the same or could take even less punishement as well after?

And you bring us to another interesting ? now about pacman. While I don't have any reason to believe he does anything to his wraps. I really (with the recent events surrounding the failure to come to terms with Mayweather) kinda have to ask myself why would a person refuse a blood test and how in the hell does a fighter his size hit so hard?????

I think baseball has proven you can hit harder on steroids.

And the point of the Williams fight was maybe his (Williams) trainers watched Tony more closely as did Shanes so he was just average and Williams was better.

But I guess we'll find out more here shortly when Tony returns.

Hey guy's whats anybody out there hearing about Rafeal or Israel any fights on the slate for either one?? As much as I enjoyed the trilogy I'm really looking forward to seeing these two move on now.

Hit me back. (but let me check your wraps first Lol)

I belive they need to ask the official who oked the wraps before margs fights.

They have to monitor and write all over them as to avoid any addition or retaping.

As for pacq and his not giving blood. Well why should he?

Every boxer goes through the same testing based on the commision of the state they are going to box in.

No one else is asking pacq to submit to a different style (though accepted) form of testing.

It is the commision who decides what rules the boxer needs to follow, not the boxer who demands his own personal set of rules for other boxers.

I think its really silly, and a waste of time for people to make it out to be a pacq/floyd issue when they have people who say the yes and no for them, like red.
